In the Summer of 2010, we interacted with:
- Six schools
- A self-administered Orphanage
- A facility for the education of children that are mentally retarded
- Five not-for-profit Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)
- Several Professionals in the area of human development.
The schools are in rural, remote villages and in urban slum-areas in India. We were able to distribute to students in these schools, usable clothes and school supplies - that were the generous contributions of so many friends and well-wishers across the US.
We met with the parents of some of the school children that we funded over the past few years as well as those that are now being considered to be funded with scholarships. It was so heartening to see that we are indeed making a small and significant difference - three of the children were providing child labor before the scholarships enabled them to go to school... and one child was reluctantly sent back to work by his mother, since the money he'd earn as an assistant at a bakery would put food on the table (which was more urgent for his four siblings than his education).
At Rishi Valley Rural Education Center (RIVER) in South India, the level of involvement of children in the education of their peers was phenomenal!
